I fell in love with sewing last year.
I felt like I wasn’t using my creativity at work. It was so boring!! I wanted to create something, to express myself.
And at that time I was following some amazing housewife-sewing-bloggers – they inspired me to sew! They made it seem so easy!
We had home-economics class in high school which we learned about some basic stitching/ sewing skills. However I had already forgot most of them, except hand stitching. So basically I began my sewing journey with zero sewing knowledge…
My sister-in-law is very good at sewing. She offered some tips on what tools I should get, and I just bought more as I learned more. I finished my first “product” under the instruction of a church member who lived close to us. See!
These are the basic tools I bought. I didn’t buy a lot since my goal was to sew a dress with minimal expenses. (I am just cheap)
- 衣車（普通縫紉機）Sewing Machine
My sister-in-law recommended Brother XL2600I, which she had been using for 6 years already. It has the button-sewing function and 24 different stitches. I bought it on amazon and it arrived in 2 days! It came with bobbins and some extra needles. (You can skip this if you prefer hand stitching…)
- 縫紉線 Threads
I first got some basic cotton ones at Joann with 40% off coupons, and I got more when I went o Hong Kong last summer. They were so much cheaper!!! But I realized they were not as durable as the Joann ones. So I use the Hong Kong ones on thinner fabrics, Joann ones on thicker fabrics.
- 畫粉片 Tailor Chalk
My mom always had a piece of tailor chalk in her sewing kit. And it seemed she has been using the same one all these years… I thought it was useless, but I was wrong! You can make marks for button , seams, pockets…
- 縫份尺 Seam Gauge
I almost didn’t want to get this – It was just another ruler! Well, it’s a ruler with inches and cm, and also the little thing that you can move so that you can make sure your seam is even.
- 大頭針 Ball-Point Pin
Sharp ball-point pins are essential! They hold the patterns and fabrics. I usually pin everything before I sew them together. 20-30 ball-point pins should be enough! (or more!)
- 兩把剪刀 Two Pairs of Scissors
– A pair of sharp fabric-cutting scissor. Please, choose a pair of quality scissors. I used to cut fabrics with a pair a cheap, dull scissors. Then one day I couldn’t move my thumb. It hurt SO BAD. I thought I could never sew or play piano again… Later Felix bought me a pair of Gingher scissors. That was one of the best gifts ever! Super sharp. (note: don’t use your fabric scissors to cut anything else!)
– A pair of thread cutting scissors.
- 拆線器 Seam Ripper
I could never have finished a clothing without a seam ripper. I am terrible at getting the thread tension right and so I always need to redo my stitches. I hope someday I can finish a project without using it… Someday…
- 針 Needles
I bought a little travel sewing kit and it came with a pack of needles of different thicknesses.
Should be it for now!
Sewing is a skill that can save you money! Think about how much money you spent on fixing buttons and hems! It is also a fun activity that allows you to create.
President Uchtdoft once shared,”The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before.Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty.”
